Not all people can eat all foods. Some foods or ingredients can cause adverse reactions due to individual body chemistries. These can be described as either food intolerance or food allergies.
Food intolerances are reactions to chemicals in food, such as monosodium glutamate, or may be caused by enzyme deficiencies, leading to digestive problems, such as lactose intolerance.
True food allergies occur when the body's immune system reacts to proteins in certain foods. Reactions can come on suddenly or may be delayed and can be very serious. The following food sources have been identified as the most common allergy causing ingredients, accounting for 90% of all food allergies:
- Milk (such as cheese, casein, whey)
- Eggs
- Peanuts (such as peanut flavor, peanut butter)
- Tree nuts (such as walnuts, cashews, almonds)
- Fish (such as bass, flounder, cod)
- Crustacean shellfish (such as shrimp, crab. lobster)
- Soybeans (such as soy sauce, soy protein, soy lecithin)
- Wheat
Jack in the Box® products may contain one or more of the eight major allergens listed above. At the end of each ingredient list, ingredients that may cause food allergy are declared following a "contains" statement and are printed in bold.
